South Shore project update: Water collection line underway

Community News Posted on March 09, 2026

Crews have been making good progress on construction associated with the South Shore pump station since work began in November.
To date, the contractor has relocated water and sewer lanes on the streets surrounding the project, which helps make space for the gravity collection lines. Work to build out the gravity collection line is underway on Heards Lane working for Saladia Drive west toward 59th Street. The line will carry surface water that collects on the roadways to the pump station.
Centerpoint is also gearing up to relocate powerlines near South Shore Drive. Once that work is complete, then the contractor will begin on the excavation and foundation work for the pump station. The City estimates the foundation work will begin in April.
The South Shore Drainage Project is one of a series of flood risk reduction projects that the City of Galveston plans to implement. In addition, this project will reduce the duration and impacts of street flooding within the project area during sunny day flooding events as well as following large rainfall events helping to preserve emergency access to the island’s residents.
This project will upgrade the stormwater system along Bayou Shore Drive, South Shore Drive, Heards Lane, and 59th Street while restoring deteriorated pavement and improving roadway safety. It also includes a pump station to mitigate the effects of high tide events on the stormwater collection system. During these events, the stormwater runoff will be diverted to the pump station and discharged into English Bayou. Sluice gates will be installed on the gravity collection system outfalls reducing the impact of high tide events, preventing the recirculation of the pump station discharge, and lowering the chances of flooding from rainfall events.
