Fleeing Suspect Injures Jamaica Beach Officer

At approximately 1230 AM, the Lake Jackson Police Department requested the assistance of the Galveston Police Department in apprehending a suspect in a white Ford truck that had been eluding capture for some time at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. The suspect, later identified as John Perkins (03/30/1978), had reportedly threatened to kill himself and a passenger.

Galveston police officers, as well as an officer of the Jamaica Beach Police Department, deployed to the 16000 block of Farm to Market Road 3005, specifically the area between the entrance to the Galveston Island State Park and the city limits of the village of Jamaica Beach, where there are two lanes in each direction and a grassy median. Police cars were positioned so as to encourage Perkins to stay in the east bound lanes, as opposed to crossing the median, driving east in the west-bound lanes, which could cause a head-on collision.

Perkins struck a Galveston police car with his truck, and then made catastrophic contact with a Jamaica Beach police car, doing extensive damage to the car, lifting it off of the ground and throwing it into another otherwise uninvolved vehicle.

The crash damaged Perkins’ vehicle beyond its ability to continue, and officers took Perkins into custody. Other officers immediately began providing first aid to the Jamaica Beach officer, who had multiple injuries. The Jamaica Beach police officer was transported to UTMB by ambulance and is currently in critical but stable condition. Perkins has been charged with Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant by the Galveston Police Department with a bond of $250,000, as well as additional charges by the Lake Jackson Police Department.
