City advocates for funding for West End septic to sewer project

The City’s Legislative Coordinator Sally Bakko and City Engineer Daniel Christodoss spoke on Monday night seeking support and funding for a West End Septic to Sewer project during a public meeting conducted by TCEQ Commissioner Toby Baker on proposed projects for RESTORE Council consideration. This shovel-ready project would help move residents in subdivisions west of Seawall Boulevard onto the sewer system instead of relying on septic tanks.

The project aims to tackle the serious problem of aging septic systems with the goal of reducing nutrient loads and potential pathogens and improving the water quality in waters surrounding Galveston Island. The City of Galveston believes strongly in the importance of this $13.5 million project as an investment to improve resiliency and water quality by preventing the destructive effects of source pollution emitting from aging septic systems.

The City of Galveston is resubmitting this project for funding and we are encouraged by the support Commissioner Baker has voiced toward this project and the important goals it would achieve.

This funding will be for the Phase 1 of the master plan to covert all septic to sewer in the West End.  Phase 2 of the master plan is also shovel ready. The remaining phases are under planning.
