City Council candidate filing period opening January 27 for District 2

The City of Galveston is holding a special election on Saturday, May 6, 2023, and the filing period for candidates will open January 27, 2023. The deadline to file is February 17, 2023.

The current District 2 representative William Schuster is stepping down because he’s moving out of district, which triggered the special election in May 2023. The terms run every two years on even years typically.

Residents filing to run for City Council must live in district for at least one year prior to the election. City Council meets at least once every month and representatives provide constituent services throughout the month. Positions are unpaid.

The filing period for District 2 candidates will open on January 27, 2023, at 8 a.m. and will remain open until February 17, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. The election will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2023. For complete information about voting, please visit galvestonvotes.org.

The application form to file for candidacy is available at galvestontx.gov/election. For questions, please contact the City Secretary’s Office at 409-797-3510.
