Parks for Pollinators event gets underway this weekend

The City of Galveston's Parks and Recreation Department has teamed up with the Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council, Better Parks for Galveston, and area Master Naturalists to host a weekend event perfect for kids and adults.

The Parks for Pollinators event this weekend will create a citizen database of local pollinators observed in Galveston, including butterflies, bees and moths, bats, hummingbirds and beetles. Parks for Pollinators is part of a larger campaign hosted through a partnership between the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation, which aims to raise public awareness of the pollinator crisis and encourage local action through public parks and recreation. Pollinators and their habitats not only support biodiversity but build resilient healthy communities by helping fight against climate change, heat island effect and water quality issues, as well as many other benefits.

The event is self-guided because of the ongoing pandemic, but it is easy to participate and work collaboratively with your neighbors. To participate, first visit galvestontx.gov/parksforpollinators and watch the instructional video. Next, download the iNaturalist app and in the iNaturalist app go to More |Add project |"Parks for Pollinators 2021-galveston-parks." Then, start searching for pollinators!

We encourage residents to go on their own or take their families to a park this weekend and start collecting your pictures and documenting your observations. While you can participate anywhere on the island, these eight parks are likely to have sightings:

  1. East End Lagoon – 1919 Boddeker Rd
  2. Corp Words Nature Sanctuary – TX 168
  3. Victory Garden / GOFM Youth Gardeners Program at Burnet – 5501 Ave S
  4. West End Dog Recreation Area – 3115 83rd Street
  5. Sandhill Crane Soccer Complex Observation Deck – 3338 7 Mile Road
  6. Lafitte’s Cove – 3503 Eckert Drive
  7. Edward and Helen Oppenheimer Bird Observatory – 13102 Stewart Road (near Settegast)
  8. Galveston Island State Park – 14901 FM 3005
