GALVESTON, TX – May 28, 2021 – A special election will occur on Saturday, August 28 for the District 1 position on the Galveston City Council.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott approved the special election this week, allowing the city to hold an election outside of the two state election days, which are typically the first Saturday in May or the first Tuesday in November.
Galveston voters last November elected Rev. E.R. Johnson as the District 1 representative, however, Mr. Johnson sadly died in April, leaving a vacancy on the City Council.
The filing period for District 1 candidates will begin on June 1 at 8 a.m. and remain open until June 23 at 4:30 p.m. Each council member elected to represent a district shall have been domiciled and shall have his or her principal physical residence in such district for a period of not less than one year immediately preceding the council member’s election. Council positions are unpaid.
To file to run, interested candidates must fill out an application and appoint a campaign treasurer, which are both available by form on the city website. These forms may be submitted by visiting the City Secretary’s Office on the second floor of City Hall, 823 Rosenberg, or by email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
