Major 18th Street drainage project beginning Monday; work requires Harborside closure

Galveston, TX – Thursday, March 25 – Work will begin on a major drainage project along 18th Street next week to increase the capacity to move water during storms and mitigate flooding.

The City of Galveston has issued a notice to proceed on an 18th Street project and completed design work for the project, which will install an underground storm drainage system from Avenue O 1/2 south into the bay. The project includes large underground reinforced concrete structures and the size of the outfall at the bay will be significantly increased to move water more quickly.

As part of the work, large drainage boxes will need to be installed on 18th Street near Harborside. This work will necessitate closure of Harborside Drive at 18th Street for much of April. There aren't alternative options available to avoid the closure, so the city is working around the holiday and the summer schedule to complete the work when less traffic is on the road.

The closure will be completed in two phases. The first phase will occur on Monday, March 29 through Wednesday, March 31. The closure will be nightly beginning at 6:30 p.m. until 6:30 a.m. for preparatory work before the installation begins.

The second phase will begin on April 12, 2021. This will be a full closure, day and night, with an anticipated completion of April 30, 2021. During this time, the drainage boxes will be installed.

During both phases, traffic will be detoured from 19th Street to the Strand to 16th Street and back to Harborside, and vice versa in the opposite direction. Hazardous waste haulers and oversized loads will be detoured from 33rd Street to Broadway to 14th Street to Harborside, and vice versa in the opposite direction.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. While there will likely be traffic delays during construction, we look forward to the benefits of this major drainage project.
