Recovering From Harvey

after the storm website graphics-2

Hurricane Harvey impacted residents up and down the Gulf Coast. Our hearts go out to our neighbors in every direction. While Galveston fared very well in comparison to our neighboring communities, we do have residents and businesses who did not escape Harvey's wrath. Homes and businesses throughout the island in low lying areas took on water, and now the recovery phase begins. The City will utilize this page to centralize all of the information that you need to begin the process of recovery if you were impacted.

PERMITTING

Building permit fees to rebuild and repair damage directly related to hurricane Harvey have been waived by city council ordinance until October 31, 2017. Building permits are still required. This includes necessary repairs to businesses along Broadway. Contact Development Services at (409) 797-3660 or email the Planning Counterfor more information.

DEBRIS PLACEMENT & PICKUP

Crews are out cleaning up debris and have noticed that residents who have begun cleaning up are placing debris in the roadway. Should we get more rain, this could block our storm drains that drained very well during Harvey. Please place all debris above the curb.

  • September 30, 2017 will be the final day for Hurricane Harvey Debris pickup.
  • Crews will be working 61st East Friday, September 22 and Friday, September 29, 2017.
  • They will be working 61st West Saturday, September 23, and Saturday, September 30, 2017.
  • Crews will work from 6:00 a.m. to noon. (These times may be extended depending on the amount of debris that is out)

BEACH CLEANUP

The Park Board has two dedicated crews that monitor and remove trash and debris from the island's west end beaches. With the recent heavy rains and flooding in the region crews and homeowners are starting to see a larger amounts of debris that is making its way down the coast and onto our shores. These inundations of debris are normal and expected after these types of events. Our crews will be removing debris daily with a focus on the larger debris that could pose a public safety concern. As time allows they will also be removing the smaller items as they make their way down the beaches. This process will take time but our crews are dedicated to providing a clean and safe beach for everyone to enjoy.

Please feel free to reach out to our Coastal Zone team at 409-797-5107 if there are any immediate concerns that need to be resolved.

DAMAGE ASSESSMENT TEAMS

The City has deployed damage assessment teams throughout the island to survey the impacts of Hurricane Harvey to Galveston. These teams are currently working to notate all areas affected. In the coming days, they will be speaking with property owners directly to assess damage to their property. City employees will always have photo identification on them. All employees will have visible identification. If you ever have a concern that someone is falsely representing themselves as a City employee, you can contact the Galveston Police Department at our non-emergency number 409-765-3702.

ON OUR WEBSITE & SOCIAL MEDIA
