Scholes featured after being named Reliever Airport of the Year

scholes

Scholes International Airport has a rich history. Opened in 1931 to serve the island’s bustling entertainment and gambling industry, the airport has since been used for army aircraft during World War II and today accommodates a variety of tenants, from tourists to oil companies working offshore.

In April, Texas Department of Transportation Aviation named Scholes International Airport the reliever airport of the year and this month Business View Magazine featured the airport in its latest edition.

The city-owned airport is self-sufficient. It doesn’t receive any local property tax dollars and a recent report showed the airport contributes more than $40 million annual to the local economy.

Scholes is now undergoing a renovation. In December, we kicked off Phase One of a big pavement improvement project to rehabilitate the primary runway, all five taxiways, and the north hangar ramp.

We’re proud of our airport and its recognition as Reliever Airport of the Year! Please take a moment to read through the article in January’s edition and learn more about this local gem.
