City of Galveston to offer online permitting, new services

Galveston, TX – Nov. 5, 2018 – Beginning early next year, residents, contractors and developers seeking building permits will be able to manage their applications online – a move that will speed up the permitting process and simplify plan review.

For months, the City of Galveston’s Development Services and Information Technology departments have been working on this new service to move all plan and permitting information online using a specialized computer program called Accela. The new system has huge benefits for residents, contractors and developers working on construction projects.

“By switching to electronic plan review we will be able to simplify the process and save time for permit seekers and for City staff reviewing the permits,” Assistant Director of Development Services Catherine Gorman said. “We’re excited to be able to offer this new service to our residents and businesses, and look forward to working with them to facilitate their construction and renovation projects.”

This month, some of our frequent permit seekers will begin using the new online permitting system and offering feedback on the program. We will use that information to perfect the service before it becomes available for all permit seekers in the coming months.

The City is excited for this move in which permit seekers will be able to submit design plans 24/7 online instead of bringing them into the office in a paper format. We know this will save time and permit seekers will have more flexibility in when they are able to submit the necessary documentation.

“People are building new homes and businesses, and renovating historic homes all over Galveston,” City Manager Brian Maxwell said. “We want to help and improve that process anyway we can, including by offering e-permitting.”

As the website launches, we will be sending out detailed information about how to use the website and submit permits online.
