Municipal Setting Designation application available online

The City of Galveston is considering a Municipal Setting Designation (MSD) application proposed by Freeport-McMoRan Energy, LLC (Galveston Sulphur Terminal at 4500 Old Port Industrial Road.)

The Engineering Department has reviewed the application and held a public meeting about the application on Sept. 18. The application is now available online here

Freeport-McMoRan Energy, LLC indicated they have found chlorinated solvents in the shallow groundwater on the site, including vinyl chloride at levels above the regulatory limit.  If the Municipal Setting Designation application is approved by the City and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), wells within a five-mile radius of the site cannot be used.

The City has notified all registered well owners within the five-mile radius and property owners within a 1/2 mile radius. The City water supply is not affected, as we receive our treated surface water supply from Gulf Coast Water Authority in Texas City.
