What is a Sister City?
A sister city is a long-term partnership between two communities in two different countries. This partnership is an approved agreement by the highest ranking officials from each city. The Sister Cities concept was initiated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in September of 1956. The purpose of the Sister Cities program is to increase international understanding and foster world peace through city-to-city relationships.
Sister city relationships offer an opportunity to form connections between two communities where cultural exchange programs occur; research and development projects are conducted, and peace is promoted through people-to-people relationships.
